Young Catholic volunteers are preparing themselves to serve in remote villages in Myanmar’s Lashio diocese for the education and development of children.
“We hope our young people will work hard for the development of children and villagers living in remote areas,” said Father Stephen Myo Min Thein, youth director of Youth Commission in Lashio diocese.
Some 15 volunteers from several parishes are undergoing training in the compound of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lashio, from May 11 to 28.
The Church organizes the training annually for young volunteers before they are sent out to remote villages.
“I really want to learn more and share my knowledge and experiences with villagers and children,” said Magdalene Aye Mai, 23, an ethnic Wa tribal woman. She said she has been serving in remote areas for three years and wants to continue to work with children.
Aye Mai said although she’s faced many challenges in the past years, such as the poverty and remoteness of villages, the work has been very rewarding.
“Amid all the difficulties and trials, I’ve decided to work for the Church as much I can and for as long as the Church is in need of me even though the Church asks for one year service,” she said.
Another volunteer, Edward Doila, 22, from Pan Pauk parish said: “After the training I’ll go anywhere where the Church sends me to teach poor children and villagers both in education and spirituality.
“I’ve prepared myself since childhood for voluntary work and to be able to work effectively in any place where I’m sent.”
The young volunteers are learning formal education taught in government run schools, Bible teaching, hymns, health education including about HIV/AIDS — social teachings, leadership, Sacraments and early childhood care development.
