Over one million people die of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Myanmar every year, said Dr. Than Sein, the President of People’s Health Foundation.
According to the WHO’s estimate, 14 million people suffered from cancer in 2012. The number of cancer patients is projected to reach about 21 million before mid-2030.
“In Myanmar, cancer has topped the list of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases, followed by heart disease and diabetics. Most of cancer patients are those aged over 50. It is just like the chronic disease. But we found cancer among youths. Like leukemia. Cancer patients are found among the females aged around 30. An estimated 35 million people die of non-communicable diseases worldwide every year. The number of non-communicable diseases surpasses that of communicable diseases. Cancer, heart disease and diabetics are linked to the consumption of tobacco and tobacco products. The number of deaths due to non-communicable diseases has reached about one million, including other disease,” Dr. Than Sein added.
Due to unhealthy lifestyle, one in four people may die untimely. Most of deaths are linked to cancer. Currently, 10.5 per cent (2.5 million people) have diabetics. The 19.7 million populations (19.7 per cent) are likely to suffer from diabetics. 6.3 million populations (26.4 per cent) have hypertension, 8.8 million (36.7 per cent), high cholesterol, 1.3 million (5.4 per cent), are fat, 5.3 million (22.4 per cent), obesity, 6.2 million (26.1 per cent), tobacco smokers, 10.3 million (43.2 per cent), chew betel, 4.7 million ( 19.8 per cent) consume alcohol and 2.4 million (10.3 per cent) is linked to overconsumption of alcohol.
