The Ywarthargyi Psychiatric Hospital received nearly 8,000 patients seeking treatment for alcohol addiction last year, said Dr Aye Aye Thin, the medical superintendent of the hospital.
“Nearly 1,700 patients are receiving treatment at the 1,200-bed hospital, most of whom are addicted to alcohol. We give treatment to 1,650 to 1,700 patients daily. Alcohol addicts top the patient lists, followed by those who suffer depression, mental disorders and chronic depression caused byother diseases such as cancer and kidney disease,” Dr Aye Aye Thin added.
According to the superintendent, most alcohol addicts at the hospital are between the ages of 20 and 40 and receive psychiatric treatment in addition to treatment for alcohol addiction.
"I worry about our country’s future as they are the country’s major workforce. Psychiatrists are making efforts to educate people about the disadvantages of alcohol consumption," she continued.
Psychiatrists are working with the Ministry of Health and Sports to include lessons on mental health caused by alcohol consumption in the country's school curriculum.
