This is a description of the event from one who attended. It is to his knowledge the first public event to raise money for “AIDS orphans” in Burma.
White Rainbow started after and HIV training for journalist and writers last year. Some time after the training, a group of writers who participated in the training and later a couple of philanthropists started a small initiative caring for infected orphans. This year some poets heard about it and joined efforts to convene the poetry reading event to raise awareness and funds for the initiative. Coincidentally, it was held on the eve of "World AIDS Orphans' Day".
The photo shows rock singer "She" reciting a poem she herself wrote about a kid suffering with HIV who lost her parents. The event was, in general, a success. Local print journals covered it and it raised over two million kyat. But more importantly it raised the awareness and concern of many from the literati and performance sector. The need to support not just infected kids and orphans but also to everyone as well was also sensed.
