COVID-19 may be uppermost in people’s minds these days but they should also be aware of annual diseases that hit the country, especially H1N1 flu, the Health and Sports Ministry has warned.
The flu, which usually occurs in the rainy season, has similar symptoms to COVID-19 so people need to be careful.
“Seasonal flu and COVID-19 have similar symptoms, and both of them are dangerous,” said U Than Naing Soe, a director at the ministry. “That is why in persons under investigation, we first look for COVID-19 and then for seasonal flu.”
The ministry has recorded eight H1N1 cases in the past month, five A/H3N2 cases, and two Influenza B cases, but there have been no deaths.
“There is an H1N1 vaccine, so I urge people to get vaccinated,” he said.
There haven’t been many cases in the past year, but people shouldn’t dismiss the danger of seasonal flu while focusing on COVID-19,” Daw Khin Khin Gyi, director of Contagious Disease Prevention and Eradication at the Department of Public Health, said on social media on June 23.
Symptoms of H1N1 include cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, muscle pain, fatigue, sneezing, running nose, diarrhoea, vomiting and stomachache. Its incubabtion period is one to five days.
The department said the virus is more severe in the elderly, infants, and people with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory and chronic disease. - Translated
