Narcotics training resumes this month
By Ni Ni Myint
THE Myanmar Anti-Narcotic Association (MANA) will continue its ongoing training program with anti-drug courses in 11 townships around the country starting this month.
The two-day training courses focus on educating locals about narcotic drugs; drug-related diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis; and reproductive health.
Dr Maung Maung Lwin, the team leader of the program, said the trainings started in 2005 and are designed to target “women who are exposed to drug users”.
Each course is aimed at attracting at least 30 women and 10 men, he said, adding that the program is run under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and is supported by the United Nations Population Fund.
“There are many social and economic problems that stem from narcotic drug use. The biggest one is HIV/AIDS, which is why we emphasise that subject in our trainings,” Dr Maung Maung Lwin said.
MANA trainer Dr Tin Nge Soe said the association also cooperates with government organisations under the Ministry of Health that operate in each targeted township.
“We provide education based on theory and the local government organisations in each region provide us with a practical framework in which to work,” she said.
She said the communities where they have worked have welcomed the training programs and often ask them to come back and hold additional courses.
“When the courses are done we choose 20 of the trainees to contribute to educational pamphlets and distribute condoms after we leave.
"Then we go back later to see what they have accomplished,” Dr Tin Nge Soe said.
