Independent advice on counselling and testing is presented to WHO and UNAIDS – will they heed it?

The UNAIDS Reference Group on HIV and Human Rights in an independent group convened by UNAIDS to give guidance on human rights. They have just released a statement and recommendations on scaling up HIV testing and counselling available at http://data.unaids.org/pub/ExternalDocument/2007/20070905_rghr_statement_testing_en.pdf There has been no publicity on the report from UNAIDS since it was published last week.

It remains to be seen whether UNAIDS and especially WHO will take these recommendations to heart or whether they will continue to roll on in their headquarters’-inspired push to increase ‘provider initiated testing and counselling’.

It is time for all UN system organisations to opt out of opt out options.

The need to step up the fight against compulsory and mandatory testing

His favourite part in the statement and recommendation is under the heading "The need to step up the fight against compulsory and mandatory testing". He is not usually a fan of militaristic language in the field of HIV. But this IS a fight.
